Herpes Simplex Virus, also known as HSV, is a member of the alpha herpesviridae subfamily. The virus has a large double-stranded DNA genome, enclosed by an icosapentahedral capsid made up of capsomers. Infection by HSV causes lesions or blisters on the skin, lips or genital tract. Herpes Simplex Virus I (HSV-I)- IgM test detects the presence of lgM antibodies, which indicates the presence of HSV infections.
